Hi there! I’ve been in a massive slump lately, and I’m looking for good historical fiction reads. Several of my current projects are Hf, and I’d like to start another one, but I’ve been stuck reading children’s historical fiction which is great, but really doesn’t go very deep into historical context. I know there is research to be done, but I’m curious if anyone has recommendations to get the old (no pun intended) creative juices flowing again.

        @annabethkatherinewingfeather. Hello, Annabeth! 😀

Ooh, Historical Fiction? I myself am a Historical Fiction writer! I also love reading Historical Fiction! 😉

So…let me give a few suggested His-Fic novels! (that aren’t Children’s age range. Trust me, I feel you for that. XD I ran into the same problem years ago.) I’m gonna have to rack my brain for this one! XD

        1. Preacher on the Run by Jayna Baas (about the Regulator movement in North Carolina shortly before the American Revolution began)

        2. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne (about WWII and The Holocaust

        3. Refiner’s Fire trilogy by Lynn Austin (about the American Civil War)

        4. Sunrise at Normandy trilogy by Sarah Sundin (Historical Romance, technically, but it also had such good historical facts! About WWII, specifically D-Day)

        5. Seeds of America trilogy by Laurie Halse Anderson (technically middle-grade readers, but it has good, sound historical facts as well! About the American Revolution)

Also, do you enjoy History books as well? I’ve read many of those as well! And Biographies too. What time period do you write in? (That might help me out a bit. XD) But those I listed are a few suggestions. 😉 If you want History books or biographies as well, just let me know! 😀

Oh, and Jayna Baas, Lynn Austin, and Sarah Sundin are ALL Christian writers as well! 🙂

Oh, and I’ve also had Roseanna M. White, another Christian HF writer, recommended to me multiple times.

Also, let me tag someone that can maybe help you out a bit.

@gracie-j, girl, sorry for tagging you again, but you probably know even more His-Fic novels than me. XD

Thanks! My main periods of interest are the Revolutionary War and Tudor England, but I have several fanfiction of a historical musical from the turn of the 20th century. I’ll have to check out the books and authors you mentioned; can’t wait!

Ah historical fiction is one of my absolute FAVORITE genres, so I’m more than happy to provide a few recs. 🙂

Within These Lines by Stephanie Morrill. It’s a book set in the USA in World War II about the Japanese internment camps. It’s a really emotional and touching/moving story and I can’t recommend it enough!!!

The Lost Girl of Astor Street by Stephanie Morrill. This is a 1920s mystery novel, and the historical backdrop is so much fun to read about!

The Ice Swan by J’nell Ciesielski. I wasn’t totally in love with this book when I read it, but the best part about it is its historical setting. It’s about World War I and some of the aftereffects of the Russian Revolution in 1917.

Echo Mountain (set in Maine during the Great Depression) and Beyond the Bright Sea by Lauren Wolk.

A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielsen. This one is about the rise of the Berlin Wall in Germany.

Aim by Joyce Moyer Hostetter. It’s another one set during World War II in 1941.

Well, I hope this helps somewhat, and good luck with your writing!!!

@annabethkatherinewingfeather. Oh, also, I also thought of another book. 😉

Sophia’s War by Avi. This one is honestly one of my favorite books. 😍 It has such solid fact, and it also is just a GREAT story. It’s centered around the American Revolution, specifically Benedict Arnold’s betrayal and I enjoyed the portrayal of John Andre in it. It’s a great book. I wish I had books for Tudor England, but alas. 😅😂 (Oh, and, if you like to watch TV, the cartoon Liberty’s Kids is about the American Revolution! And all of the episodes, every last one, are on Youtube!)
