By Mallory O’Bier
Clickety-clack,
New and black;
Click-clack-ding!
And the paper rolls back.
Letter then letter
Line by line,
White paper is marred
By a black ink design.
Clickety-clack,
Old and rusted;
Years have passed
Since last it was dusted.
Silent and still,
It speaks no more;
Hasn’t since
The last World War.
But letter to letter
Line by line,
Remain the white paper’s
Black ink design.
Mallory O’Bier is a 20 year-old Servant of the King, Word Hoarder, dreamer, and avid reader, who lives with her parents and two siblings near an “End State Maintenance” sign in Virginia. She first picked up the writing habit keeping journals, and corresponding with friends. From there, she expanded to recording snippets of her imagination that closely resembled poetry and prose, inspiring her to become a writer. Mallory likes to write just about anything, especially fantasy fiction, whenever she has the time and even when she doesn’t. Her mom is her writing consultant, and her siblings are the walls she bounces her wildest ideas off of. Aside from writing and reading, Mallory enjoys meeting a friend for a chat at the cafe, participating in online classes, talking shop, practicing guitar, watching old movies, paddleboarding, drawing, and playing games with her siblings.
I still love it, Mallory. In fact, it’s probably one of my favorite poems. Very simple, but at the same time subtly powerful. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. 🙂
Golly, @kate-flournoy . The idea of anything I write ever becoming someone’s favorite anything just blows my mind! The idea is both strange and delightful. If gives me joy to think that something I wrote that gave me pleasure (and a little pain, I must confess!) can give pleasure to someone else. I couldn’t have done it without you and rest of my friends from the forum. The title you came up with is just perfect. 🙂
Agreed. This is really good.
Beautiful poem, Mallory.
Love it!!!!!!!
Lovely, Mallory! It’s a beautiful poem. 🙂
Love this!!! Thanks so much for first sharing on the forum! It’s so cool to see something that’s almost like a community project up on the “big screen”! ;D
Thanks, @spradlin , @belegteleri , @faithdk , @daeus , @hope , @kate-flournoy ! I only just saw it up. So exciting! 🙂 I’m glad y’all like it. (Still like it, I should say 😉 ) If I never write another “beautiful poem” (which is a legitimate possibility. Poetry writing seems to range from easy to super hard, with no in-between!) I will at least have this one to remember. This was a really satisfying project, and I am really encouraged by how it turned out. 🙂
Like everyone else has said, Mallory, it a great poem. Very beautiful. 🙂
Thanks, Bluejay. 🙂 I was just thinking today, “What about poetry? Oh, I probably shouldn’t waste my time on it. I’ve got other projects, and I’m not very good at it.” But then I had this page up to get the link for a friend, and I read the comments. All of you make me feel like I should pursue poetry further, so I guess I’ll just make time for it. 🙂
Good job! I love the words you chose to tell this poem. It really has a strong voice. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! That’s so encouraging to hear. I love working with words. 🙂
