Greetings, fellow writers!
So, I’ve been thinking about doing this thing for a while, and I’ve finally gotten a room reserved and a date set. I don’t know how long the drive will be for y’all (although, I have been to Delaware and back in a single day for those of you who live there), but I went through the “Where do you live?” forum and sniffed out all the Ohioans I could find. If I missed any, please invite them. And I hope you all can make it.
I’ve done a couple of these in the past on a much smaller scale, but I know a lot more writers now, so there could be anywhere from fifteen to thirty peopl eat this thing. It’ll be a bit of a workshop, so if you want to do a brief, 2-minute “teaching” time, let me know. We’ll have short instructional periods prior to some of our activities, and we’ll spend a lot of the time there actually writing. I know it’s in the middle of NaNo for some of y’all, myself included, but I think it will be a time to get inspiration flowing. We’ll have some time for games, some time for critiques, some time for fellowship, and some time for lunch. If you can’t make it for the whole thing, that’s okay, but I need to know how long you can be there.When: November 19th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Lifeway Christian Bookstore
North Plaza
1100 30th Street Northwest
Canton, OH 44709
Who: A group of young writers who love Jesus! If you have other friends who like to write, too, you are welcome to invite them on the conditions that: 1) Their writing samples will be appropriate for younger teens to read, and 2) I know they are coming by November 16th.Activities will include:
-Writing exercises and games
-Short instructional periods about important issues for writers like character development, dialogue, showing vs. telling, etc.
-Editing time (partnering and critiquing)
-Lunch (a very important activity!)Please bring:
-A notebook or laptop
-A novel, short story, or poem that you have written. If you’re bringing a laptop, you don’t need to print out your story, but otherwise, please print out the first couple of chapters if it’s a novel and the whole thing if it’s a short story or poem. We will have about an hour for this activity, so if you are a poet, you might want to bring more than one poem.
-A whole boatload of creativity.
-Your brain. (Always a good thing to have along.) 🙂Notes:
-Let me know when you receive this e-mail, whether you know if you can attend or not, so I know I have your e-mail address correct.
-If you are interested in bringing some sort of snack, please let me know.
-R.S.V.P. as soon as possible, and let me know if you’re bringing any friends.
-You may also receive an e-mail from me on this topic if I have your e-mail address, and if you have mine, you can R.S.V.P. by e-mail.Hope to see you all there!

Oh wow @His-Instrument, you really went to a lot of trouble to put this together. I love the idea and would love, love love to do this, but I’m afraid my schedule (aka evil overlord 😉 ) won’t allow it. 🙁 Mostly because right now is a really busy time for my family with our cabin rental business. I wish I could attend, but since I can’t, I wish you luck.
@kate-flournoy
Your family has a cabin rental business?! That’s so neat! 😀
To all concerned: So sorry some of you can’t make it! @gretald, @daeus, @kate-flournoy, @emma-flournoy, I will definitely be having these in the future. I am looking at January, 2017 for the next possible one. It would be a Saturday from 10-2 just like this one, probably the same location, too, so if you are interested, tell me what days work for you so I can make sure you can all come to the next one.
Is Timery Blair on KP? I don’t know her, but not all of the people I invited are people I know well. (I mean, I’ve never met some of you.) Hope your cabin rental businesses, Bible bees, and travellings are pleasant and prosperous all around!
@winter-rose Hope you can make it!
I invited her to join, but I don’t know if she has. Do you want me to forward the invitation to her?
I’ll have to check out my schedule for January. Get back with you soon.
If you can forward the invitation that would be great. If she wants to come hang out with a bunch of random strangers, we’d love to have her. 🙂 Hope your Bible bee is successful. I’ve never done Bible bee before, but it sounds like fun. How has your experience with it been? What are the requirements?
Ok, good. I’ll let her know about it.
As for the bible bee, I highly recommend it. The competition is very helpful in keeping me to a consistent schedule. Only problem is 18 is the age limit, so this is my last year. There’s a local and national competition (for qualifiers) testing both memory of passages and knowledge of the focus chapters of scripture. Nationals is great, since you get to learn so much (I think I have to memorize 600 verses plus other things) but that also means it’s a heavy workload. I’ve managed to get by without dedicating much time to it per day, but I’m cutting it close with trying to have everything down perfect. For some people, it’s practically their whole life if they make it to nationals.
Oh, no! I’ll be away at bible bee. Really like the idea though. Maybe we could do another one next year?
Btw, do you know/have you invited Timmory (not sure how to spell that) Blair?
For some reason there’s no “reply” option for the post I’m actually replying to. @daeus For Bible bee do you have to memorize a specified 600 verses, or are any 600 accepted? Did you qualify for Nationals? I doubt I’ll ever have time to do Bible bee, but it sounds like a great opportunity.
The passages are specified. Yes, I did qualify.
@his-instrument
This is such a good idea!!! I wish I could come so much, but I’ll be leaving to go out of town that day. 🙁 If you ever do this again, PLEASE let me know! Hope you have a fun and productive time!
@daeus
You know Timery Blair?!?! It seems like we know a lot of the same people. 🙂 She and I were in a Speech class together a couple years ago!
Yeah, my younger siblings go to the Blair’s tapestry group and we’ve had them over once or twice. That’s cool you know them too.
Oh, yes! We do Tapestry, too, so we almost did their group, but we couldn’t due to scheduling conflicts. 🙂
Me either…pretty much what applies to Kate applies to me. 😉 That sounds terribly fun, though I don’t write books. I hope you have a good time with whoever can come. 😀
@his-instrument I talked with my dad and I can do the 7th, 21st, and 28th of January.
Btw, @gretald @ingridrd @winter-rose @kate-flournoy @emma-flournoy, Is anyone going to the celtic ball? I actually don’t know if I’m going myself, but I normally do so I assume I am.
@Daeus never heard of it. Probably won’t be able to come because pretty much any out-of-the-ordinary activity doesn’t work when we’re really busy with cabins, but what is it, where is it, and when is it held?
Anything Celtic sounds fascinating to me… 😀
Ha! Yes, they even have a bagpiper.
So to summarize this: it’s held in Deleware, it’s for homeschoolers, they do mainly traditional dances though I think there are a couple American ones, it’s fairly formal though not super-so, and it’s held every December and then also in the spring and they just started doing one in the summer too (though that one’s less formal).
Though I just figured out that apparently registration for girls is already closed. I’m definitely not on top of this thing. Only have a few days to register myself I think.
Live bagpiping! That must be fun. 😀
@kate-flournoy
If you would like to go to the Celtic Ball, there is another ball in the spring, too. Just register early because it fills up VERY quickly. 🙂
@daeus
@gretald and I are going! Hope to see you there! 🙂
Sweet. Now I guess I have to register 😛
Be forwarned though. Meeting people from online is probably my greatest fear ever, so we’ll just have to hope I don’t shut down and lose all social skills whatsoever.
I am going @daeus! See you there? Maybe? There are so many people there that it’s hard to find anyone. 😉
*chuckles* Yeah. Well, you have a few hours at least.
@daeus I’ll check with the other Ohio folks and see if those days will work for them, too. I’ll let you know about when the next Writers’ Gathering would be.
We’ll do another one in January, @winter-rose . Probably on a Saturday. Same location, same time. What are some dates that might work for you? Do you have any open weekends in January?
