Hey, Anika! I was actually just listening to your podcast when I saw this, it’s really interesting. 😀
1. I think one of the best ways to make dialogue less choppy is by developing your characters’ individual voices. Consider character ages, personalities, ethnicities, religions, etc. All of these factors contribute to character voice. One thing that I find to be the most helpful when developing character voice is listening to other people speak and listening to their tone, diction, accent, speech patterns/habits, etc.
2. How two characters talk really depends on the individual characters, but typically 11-12 year olds are casual and shy with everyone except their friends. (Along with being adorably awkward, in my opinion!) But they’re pretty open with their close friends.
