Hey y’all! So I had this awesome idea! We have writing sprints and such, so why not some days have world building sprints? Ya see, I struggle some with world building, description, etc. So, perhaps if we discuss ideas, plans, or just chat about it and do some sprints specifically focused on that it can help me and others!
Also I’d love any tips you have on world building and how to write it out, etc. We can have so much fun discussing our worlds, ideas, little seemingly insignificant details, or whatever! What do y’all think?
I suppose I’ll start with some details!
So book 1 takes place solely in 2 places.
It starts in Ara’s homeland of A’Grend. The rest of the book takes place in Cirque.

#ProtectSebApril 24, 2021 at 11:50 pm #98522I heard worldbuilding so I am here. XD I’ve been trying to get more consistent about my worldbuilding recently, so this is great timing.

April 26, 2021 at 12:30 pm #98543@godlyfantasy12 I barely world-build (usually make it up as I go, which is probably bad), but I would love to use this sprinting time as motivation to fill out profiles for my characters. Thanks for tagging me!
Lately, it's been on my brain
Would you mind letting me know

#ProtectSebMay 29, 2023 at 8:17 pm #145456Try making a map!
I love doing maps because you can come up with all kinds of ruined locations, and then it ends up helping develop the history of your world. Idk maybe that’s just a dystopian writer thing lol… I think every world deserves a few ancient ruins though.

May 29, 2023 at 8:22 pm #145457Yeah I’m totally with you
my book takes place on a different earth so it has humans and stuff and I’m not looking to be super descriptive like LOTR XD but I still need some kind of base and I don’t even know where to start
I’ve never done any worldbuilding before XD
so help!

Do me a favor…. Tell Cress I meant it
-ThorneMay 29, 2023 at 9:47 pm #145459Oh I think the best place to start is thinking of necessary history. If you already have a basic story, how did the characters get where they are now? what motivates them? Is the world old, or new? If it’s old, the past experiences/grudges the people have would likely be past down between generations, which could affect your characters motives. Idk that’s just where I started, the history of my series includes a civil war, causing the current characters to have a fear of conflict, which prevents resolution.

May 30, 2023 at 11:35 am #145486Ugh, yes! I feel you girl! I’m in the midst of world-building rn and it is very overwhelming. I start working on one thing then I start getting inspo for another, next thing I know my page is covered in random snippets for the entire world. 😂
I agree with Min that making a map is very helpful. I would recommend making a map and then choosing one area on that map, whether it be a town, woods, or landmark, to flesh out. Write down everything unique about that specific place. Creatures, people groups, architecture, customs, anything you can think of. Just let the inspo flow, but try to stick with that area. 😉 Hopefully, by the end, you’ll have a basic outline of that place that can then help you expand on it more.

May 30, 2023 at 12:01 pm #145489A good thing to know when your worldbuilding is why your worldbuilding. In your case, I’m pretty sure it’s writing. So now, what kind of world do you want to create, hard, soft, somewhere in-between? Now once you’ve answered these, there is no one way to start worldbuilding. Whatever feels relevant to the story, go ahead and develop it. I reference the Laws of Sanderson as well:
1. AN AUTHOR’S ABILITY TO SOLVE CONFLICT WITH [WORLDBUILDING] IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO HOW WELL THE READER UNDERSTANDS SAID [WORLDBUILDING].
2. LIMITATIONS > POWERS
3. EXPAND WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE BEFORE YOU ADD SOMETHING NEW.
If you want guidelines, I’d say these are pretty good, and very overall encompassing, though Sanderson himself admits they aren’t perfect, and you can break them if you feel it works better in the story.
Also don’t feel too much pressure to feel original, what we must admit is that it has all been done in some shape or form, so all you can do is do it again, but with your own voice, then it will feel different. Though that is not an excuse to rip anything off, instead, let yourself be inspired.

May 30, 2023 at 12:36 pm #145501@thearcaneaxiom thx for the advice!! Yea a lot of what I create is inspired by other things but I make it waaay different XD
@euodia-vision YESS so many things!!Also yea, probably just focusing on one aspect is a good idea, but it’s just soooo hard lol.

#ProtectSebMay 30, 2023 at 12:59 pm #145505*sighs* yes, ’tis very hard. 😔 And honestly, I haven’t been able to do what I recommended very well yet. XD That’s my goal every time I sit down to write, but I get sidetracked so easily. 😂 But I believe in youuuu! As you figure this all out please share anything you’ve found helpful, I could use the help. 😆

May 31, 2023 at 8:54 am #145622Aah this is great, I’m in the worldbuilding stage rn!! 😀 Will probably sprint on here a LOT.
…I’m no expert XD Honestly I just give my worlds unique aesthetics in my head, then try to expand on each of the details. Also symbols. I love symbols. Aaaand that’s like all I’ve got XD
I LOVE Sanderson’s lectures! Also I just finished Words of Radiance last night, and I’m still recovering 😛

May 31, 2023 at 9:54 am #145624I know!!! Words of Radiance was so good! I haven’t read Oathbringer yet, still need to get a copy from the library, but I’m so excited! Have you tried decoding chapter 84? I know it’s not individual letters, but what else?

June 1, 2023 at 9:03 pm #145921It was craaaazy! I’m borrowing Oathbringer from my friend soon, and I’m excited, because I love Dalinar. No, I haven’t… but there’s definitely a pattern to it, even if Sanderson doesn’t have a meaning behind it. I’ll have to think about it.
