So I recently read a book that used a certain kind of ending. This ending ends the story pretty much right after the action stops and then goes into a sort of report on what happened to the characters afterwards.
Like this:
Billy: Recovered from his head wound ands went back to happily live with his family.
Hannah: Went on to secure a job as a nina due to the skills she learned.
The MIF: Was not disbanded after all and continues to this day.
Tying up little ends like that and giving you the security that the characters’ lives continued happily on after the story. Usually I see that as somewhat cheating, but that one was done really well.
Just wondering what everyone’s opinions on that kind of ending are.
What do you think?
I’ve never read an ending like that. You’re right— it does kinda sound like cheating, but if it was well done I guess it could be pretty good. 😛
I still think I prefer both reading and writing complete ‘after stories’ just because I like details, and it would depend on the genre and style of the book, but I think an ending like that could certainly work well.
It depends; I like to see everything in the end, not just have a vague sense that someone has survived. If the book is part of a series, I like an end that culminated the main idea and yet leaves the book open for more.
INTJ - Inhumane. No-feelings. Terrible. Judgment and doom on everyone.
