You may have guessed by the name of the topic that this has to do with inns.

Then again, you may not have. Now you know.

One of my favorite phraseology exercises is to just sit back and think of all the different word combinations that evoke different feelings, images, and moods— and one of my favorite ways to do that is to make up inn names. You know— those cool collections of words that go like ‘The Saracen’s Head’ or ‘The Goat and Bagpipes’ or ‘Ye Pipe and Bowl’ or ‘The Prancing Pony’. Especially the Prancing Pony.

So let’s do this together. I wanted to share. List all the inn names you can possibly think of or make up, and we’ll see what wacky combinations we can come up with.

      Things like ‘The Prevaricating Pig’.

      ‘The Pig and Pomegranate’.

‘The Sign of the Prancing Poodle’.

Ooo, fun. I’ve never thought of inn names before:

        The Screaming Falcon

        Sign of the Rolling Heads

        The Ax and Rose

        The Black Griffin

INTJ - Inhumane. No-feelings. Terrible. Judgment and doom on everyone.

… How did I sense you would be the one that started this topic.

          Here I go.

“The sign of the wingless fowl”

          “Black tiger inn”

          “The toothless Gaul”

          “The black beet tavern”

          “The howling frog”

“Half a pint of crow’s feet”

          “Rotten oak tavern”

“The inn of the twelve pines”

Ha! The Howling Frog! Love it. So fun. 😀

I like The Screaming Falcon, too, @Hope. Nice and dramatic. I like both the funny and the sophisticated ones. Once I used ‘The Leaf and Thorn’ when I didn’t want to go for the humorous twist.

Great job, both of you. All of those would definitely qualify as inn names.

The Dog and Partridge (didn’t make that one up— it was an inn in South Knottingly, Buckinghamshire, I think. I used it in an historical fiction novel).

            The Prophetic Cat.

The Dog and the Cream Jug.

The Sign of the Sleeping Dragon.

Ooh… I like that one. Makes me wonder where it got its name. 🙂

Ha ha, I wonder what type of inn that would be.

You probably don’t want to know. 😛

                      The Wailing Wombat.

                      The Dangling Snake.

The Boat and Bulrush. (I’ve used that one already).

                      The Fish and Lilypad.

                      The Lobster and Limpet.

I think my favorites so far are, Traitors’ Rest and The Snoozing Boar. Y’all are very creative.
