Okay people. New topic. You know those really cool maps in the front of the Lord of the Rings? Who doesn’t love those? What reader did not find those maps very, very useful? And aren’t they just so amazing to look at? I find all maps fascinating, and in the front of a book taking place in unfamiliar territory they can mean the difference between a so-so reading experience and the experience of your life. Who can throw their heart into a journey without a map?
But anyway. I’m looking for mapmaking tips. Specifically, if any of you other fantasy writers out there have any favorite mapmaking software you use, I would really appreciate it if you would direct me to it. I’ve been doing all my maps by hand with a calligraphy pen and a pencil, but I can’t write small enough to squeeze in all the details I need. You know how that always works…
And I would love mapmaking tips in general. Geography. Keys. Measurements. Milestones. All that good stuff. I’ve got the general gist of it all, I think, but brainstorming never hurt, and there’s always a chance you might learn something you didn’t know before. Ideas, anyone?

        Hey, dudette!

This is actually something I’ve been struggling with myself, and I’m afraid I don’t really have a great answer. That being said, it never hurts to sketch out your world map. Even if no one else ever sees it, it’s helpful for when you’re writing. So, I’d say at least to start out, try and freehand a general idea of the map and then once you’ve gotten access to some more fancy art skills or software, go from there? 🙂 Hope this helps!

I’ve done all my maps my hand…very time consuming, but they look cool. I’ve not had much experience with doing it on the computer though. 🙂
