@bluejay Well, free verse isn’t really my biggest thing, but I have written it a little. Others will probably give you some finer points (@spradlin, get over here!), but I think the biggest point is that you have to use As-Many-Metaphors-As-Possible. I mean, free verse by its very definition means it has no structure so the only thing you’re left with is poetic imagery, which is really the most important element of all poetry forms. Since this is pretty much the only thing you have to work with for free verse though, it becomes especially important. Also, I think free verse tends to work especially well if it has your “voice” in it, though it doesn’t have to.

Yeah. What he said. Also, authenticity. The key to any poem is authenticity, but an un-authentic rhyming poem can get away with it because the words sound pleasant even without their meaning, but free-verse doesn’t have that.

          And I concur. Talk to @Spradlin. πŸ˜€

@bluejay I’ve written free verse before. Actually, It’s a poem here on KP, if you want to check it out. It’s called the Awareness of Grace. I wrote that on a whim. Just felt like trying poetry sometime (my first poem) and that’s what happened. I’m not expert….yeah, ask @spradlin. You guys could have a nice talk on the melted chair I just gave her. πŸ˜›

No, not impossible that she’s busy, just terrible timing. Please tell her that it is urgent since it is for the January theme of beginnings and so on. Thank you. *hangs up*

*APPEARS IN EXPLOSION OF UNFINISHED STUDY PACKETS* HOLD THY FIRE! I have been summoned twice–NOW THRICE *takes half melted chair and flops down* upon this night, so here I am. I agree with all that has been said so far. I also watch slam poetry for inspiration. Like, when you write free verse, you want it to be something that can be performed where the line breaks have purpose and every word has meaning–sometimes dual meaning. Word pictures are huge… Honestly, you could think of free verse as an artsy thought tumble, so it has some flow and grace to it. (If that makes sense). Hopefully that makes sense.

Yes, I believe that does make sense. Let me post this for you to critique @spradlin.

                  I wrote a simple word.
                  That’s all that started it.
                  I didn’t realize it then
But I would write a book.

                  I wrote a simple sentence.
                  A description of a hero.
                  I added more details
And a new person was born.

                  I wrote a paragraph.
                  A new scene was painted.
                  Readers learn about the land
                  In which my people live.

                  I wrote a chapter.
                  I created a problem.
I needed to fix it now.
                  So I wrote another one.

                  I wrote a novel.
                  The plot twisted inside.
                  The hero reigned triumphant.
                  The enemy was destroyed.

                  I wrote a chapter.
                  My story nears the end.
                  My hero finds his dream.
                  Life becomes peaceful.

                  I wrote a paragraph.
Bringing the story to a close.
                  I’ll leave my readers happy
                  Contented and complete.

                  I wrote a simple sentence
                  They lived happily together
                  Their lives filled with joy
Just like all good books end.

                  I wrote a simple word
                  That’s all that ended it.
                  And I suddenly realize
                  I have written a book.

Awwww! I like it! I’d say play with syntax–that’s the lovely thing about poetry. If you don’t need a period or a capital letter, you don’t have to use one. Syntax can become part of the art, so use it. If you have a word that just needs to hang, hang it on a comma. If you want to draw attention to a divided sentence, don’t capitalize the next line and so on. πŸ˜‰
