I recently found a Christian film writer on youtube who made a video about writing horror as a Christian and I found his opinion interesting and agree with it for the most part. I was curious to hear what you guys have to say as well after watching it.

It called Why Christians Should Make Horror Movies and the channel name is Ryder the Omniscient. I’ll post a link if I can figure out how.

He also has some other interesting videos on his channel as well.

I don’t feel like tagging anyone now, but if no one has responded by tomorrow, then I might.

What a coincidence, I watched that same video. It was really good, I too agree with his view. There’s one author (can’t remember his name) that writes horror as a Christian, and I think that’s good. Just because horror is scary (and at times, has depictions of really, really messed up things) doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad.

Portraying evil as what it is to present and warn people against it, or even just bring it to light, is not wrong. Where it gets wrong, I think, is when evil is either A. presented as a good thing and glorified or B. is shown to be completely unbeatable and somehow overpowers good. Good horror instead does the opposite.

For example, Dracula, the original book, is surprisingly pro-Christian. It does include horrible instance of evil, but never shows this evil to be good or cool or more powerful than good, but instead portrays it as horrifying because it is. The characters are very Christian and Christianity is viewed in a positive light, even as a weapon against evil. Frankenstein is also a good example of horror that does not encourage evil, and really discourages the act of playing God and letting pride get to one’s head.

Does that mean all horror is good? No, not even close, there are hundreds of terrible pieces of horror media that are incredibly grim, grisly, gratuitous, disgusting, and wicked. But not all horror is sinful, and can be used to show the true horror of evil. Sorry, that was a long rant. I do like horror to an extent, like Edgar Allen Poe’s short stories or books/movies that aren’t too scary.

@theshadow Good points! I just read the original Dracula this year and I loved it and the characters so much.  And it is a really good example of good Christian horror.

*Subscribes* I’ll comment more on this later, but I need to sleep.
