I know that as writers, it’s important for us to be well read, but I often find that my Walk with God suffers as a result of too many novels and not enough bible reading. So I came up with the idea that we could sort have an accountability challenge happening. The idea is basically that for one day (and then 2,3,4) you don’t read any fiction, just the bible. You don’t have to work up to not reading any books at all, you can just use it as a brief (maybe a week long?) thing to help you get into a bit of a habit of reading the bible more. So you tag someone and ask them if they would like to, with you, not read any fiction for the next day, only the bible.

@clairec This is a great idea. I have heard that reading lots of different books helps you to write better and the Bible is the best book in the world.
Would you like to do it tomorrow with me? I would love that. 🙂

@clairec That’s great. Do you have any idea where you are going to read? I’m going to read through Job. I’ve been reading a study book on Job and it’s amazing. So I need to explore this book further. I have a feeling that there is more to Job than what meets the eye. 🙂

@bluejay, Job is one of my favorite books! I am doing a reading through the Bible plan by John MacArthur Jr.; it gives you three years to read through the New Testament in very great detail and one year to read through the Old Testament. So I read 7 chapters of the N.T. over and over again for a month. And I read 3 chapters of the O.T. ever day. Looking forward to starting our challenge tomorrow! 🙂

@ClaireC I would love to, but unfortunately I don’t think I’ll have time for any reading tomorrow other than my morning devotions. Actually… come to think of it, I do this a lot. Summer is really busy for my family, and frequently I don’t have time for any reading besides the Bible in the morning. So… I guess I will be doing it, it’s just not unusual! 😀
Thanks for tagging me though. I think this is a great idea.

This is something I have trouble with on and off. Right now, I’m doing the bible bee so things are coming along well, but I may very well make use of this later.

Great idea @clairec! I’m trying to write a few sermons for my book right now so maybe this will give me some idea on what to write about. Plus I’ve been trying to get into the Word at least once a day, even if it’s just a verse.

That’s a neat idea. I have gone days without reading fiction before, because I run out of time and only end up reading my Bible and some nonfiction. That would be hard, to not be able to read nonfiction either, only the Bible. Not because I don’t like the Bible, but because there are so many other books I’m trying to read and get through. I don’t know if I’ll end up being able to do this challenge right now, but I am working on reading through the Bible in one year. I’ve been doing that since I was ten, I think…

You’re doing the Bible Bee? That is neat. I’ve memorized before, but the Bible Bee…that’s hard.

@hope, If it is Christian nonfiction, you know, commentaries, studies, etc. I guess it would count as ‘Bible’; you can really interpret the challenge however you want. You can be super strict and only read the Bible, or, if you really want to, you can expand it to nonfiction Christian literature.

That’s a cool idea, @clairec ! I know what you mean. It’s easy to get caught up in novel reading and neglect more serious stuff. Fiction makes me feel a lot more comfortable than the Bible does. The Bible speaks to me personally, not as an unknown writer, but as its recipient. There’s nothing pretend about that, which is one of the reasons why I’m so glad it has a happy ending. 🙂

I don’t think I will, @hannah-c , because I’ve been through a long period of disinterest in reading and have only just got settled back into the habit of reading more, and I kinda want to keep at it. Persevering and finishing a book doesn’t come so naturally to me as it did in my teen years. I used to finish a book almost every day.

I think part of it is Television watching. It’s so much faster and easier than reading, even though it’s not anywhere near the same. I got into the habit of (sorta) instant gratification. TV’s not bad exactly, but it doesn’t have the same benefits for improving the mind that reading has. (Especially a writer’s mind 😉 )

WARNING: I am about to reveal to you my greatest weakness!

If I don’t read a lot, I don’t have enough words rolling around in my noggin to write with …

I still think it’s a great idea, though. You guys go for it! 🙂
