      I don’t know about you, but I love taking old, dinged-up ideas of mine and shining them up a little. Sometimes the end result looks radically different from the original story.

      Take for example a super old idea of mine (I was 10-11 at the time). …Let’s call it, Jeffery the Orphan and the World-Hopping Portals to the Adorable Dragons of Your Prophecied Destiny.

      Now, six years later, it’s Jeremiah 2.0: An Alien Experiences Trauma on Earth, Goes on a Road Trip, and Becomes the Victim Whom He Couldn’t Save

      (I hope I capitalized the right words? ? The woes of a writer…)

      They sound a million light years different, but I pulled key concepts of the older version (main characters’ vibes, the dragon-like aliens, the world shifting, and the importance of unborn dragon eggs) and used them in a totally new perspective.

      Have you changed any of your stories, to the point where they’re barely recognizable? Have you switched main characters? Changed your world?

      I am out of signature ideas

        Yeah! That actually sounds like a cool story I’d read. It sounds like an Alien learns about human trauma, or experiences it or something, right? That would be really cool! It could get into complex themes of what it means to be human and stuff.

        I totally change my worlds constantly! My current one me and my sister are working on has stabilized into a steady expansion, but part of the reason I like it so much is that change is such a big part of it, where I can make a whole new world (hehe) out of the same worldbuilding principles and add it to the universe. It started out with my third age, but it wasn’t an age at all at this point, it was just how it was. The idea of a space of clustered planetoids with there own gravity. I was so proud of this at the time, and I still like it now, but now, it is only a 3d cross section of a greater 4d structure, allowing me to change it however I like at will.

        Then the magic system started with what I called magic speaking. Kind of like magic spells, but full functional languages instead. Then I had the idea of sound stone, but then me and my sister began to wonder what if gravity stone was like an element as sound stone. I thought of them as two fundamentally different things at the time, but they slowly merged together. Then the gravity stone changed to a alloy of three different stones, and we made another three stones totaling to 7 different magical stones. Then I went to the magic speaking, and realized that it was sound interacting with the different stones, so what if light and mind could interact, and it started turning into a huge magical chemistry system we created where magic speaking is just one artform in interacting with the stones. Then we added magic weaving, where these 7 are just the main universal elements, but the infinite possibility’s of magic relating to Spherical, Euclidean, and Hyperbolic spaces, and how they interact. And it’s still growing! Starting from languages to a huge system of of the fundamental reality of this universe.

        There’s lots of concepts from my old worldbuilding projects that I want to bring back, and re-implement into our current project. Like my first ever worldbuilding project, I had a character who is responsible for the death of their whole race, at least as far as they know. It would be a different character, but same premise if I added them.

        He is perfect in Justice, yet He is perfect in Mercy, even when we fail Him. For this, He is good.

          @whalekeeper Cool topic! I have a lot of stories that have gone through a big changes like this.

          The one that’s changed the most is my Wonderland WIP that started off as a game I would play with my cousins. In the game, we were all decedents of the main Alice in Wonderland characters (Alice, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, and the Jabberwoky), and we were all trying to dethrone the Queen of Hearts.

          It’s gone through several different versions since then, and now it’s a story about Ivy (aka Spade), one of the daughters of the Queen of Hearts, accidentally getting caught up in the rebellion, and struggling with her responsibilities as a princess, a daughter, a sister, and as the future queen.

          Many of the original characters remain, but a few have had their name or appearance changed.

          Also, (and I’m really embarrassed to admit this, but it’s kinda funny) my alien twins, Eddie and Ellie, used to be characters in a my-little-pony-based fantasy world. I’m glad I rescued them from that torture and put them in the story they are in now.

            @thearcaneaxiom. Whoa, that’s some really cool world building! I never give enough attention to a single story to get something like that. I have too many different stories. How long have you been working on that?

                @loopylin

                Thanks! The beginning seeds of it started during 2020. Again though, the cool thing about it is that it allows so much change in worlds. If I have a different world or story I want to tell, the magic system works in such a way where it can be put in seamlessly. So me and my sister also have too many story’s but we essentially just make it work in the same universe.

                Interesting. So the Jabberwocky has descendance? They’re still just beasts right? Or did they develop humanlike intelligence? I should probably stop ask questions like that because this is Alice and the wonderland we’re talking about. XD

                He is perfect in Justice, yet He is perfect in Mercy, even when we fail Him. For this, He is good.

                  Ehhh I cut out the Jabberwocky character. She (yes, it was a girl :/ ) was dumb. I do have the original Jabberwocky, though, and the Boy with the Vorpal Sword.

                    @whalekeeper. Great Topic!!! ??

                    Welllll…I’d probably say that the one that has changed the most is my main WIP Freedom’s Fire (with Leon/Riker)

                    It started off as just having Leon as the main character…a man who was half Jewish, married to a German woman, and as a private in the Wehrmacht (the German Army at that time) that later on in the story was revealed to be Jewish, discharged from the Wehrmacht, and had to escape with his family out of France. But they didn’t make it and were sent to a Concentration Camp, where somehow all of them survived and made it out of the war. (oh, and Leon’s original design was for him to be married to Aadelheide still, but he wasn’t Jewish, he was a High-Rank officer, he was fully devoted to the Nazi cause, very cruel/evil, and he was just a side character in another WIP of mine…hence the reason why he has a German first and last name rather than Jewish ones. ?)

                    Oh, and fun fact for all of you who know who he is…Riker was the main villain in my first idea of the book. ?? He was a General in the SS and though he wasn’t in the book a whole lot, he was basically the same as my Villain now, Hans. ?

                    Over time, the story changed. Leon became a character that is fully Jewish, he is still married to Aadelheide though, and he’s never in the Wehrmacht. Rather, he is a Jewish citizen in Germany that is sent to a Concentration Camp along with his wife (his kids are sent off to safety) and ends up losing his wife in the camp and struggling with his faith in God/anger at God/hatred of others.

                    And Riker became an MC, changing from the Evil Villain SS General to the SS Lieutenant who is kind, who had an abusive childhood, discovers the Holocaust, and struggles with guilt and shame over what he has done and always tries to do what’s right.

                    Thus becoming my favorite character ever. ??

                    But anywho…that’s how that book changed!!! This is a really fun topic, girl!!! I love it!!! ???

                      @whalekeeper

                      Great topic idea!!

                      My WIP has sort of changed… It started with one of the story prompts here on KP. One about how the villain was keeping back something much more sinister from attacking the kingdom, then he dies and the MC(s) have to take his place.

                      I was planning it as a back up in case I decided to do NaNoWriMo. Obviously I didn’t, but the story was fleshed out so much more in my head (and yeah… I made moodboards which made me wanna write it even more), and I just had to write it.

                      The last third of the book had drastically changed from the planning stage. It was much more boring then. Now, it ends so much better. Actually, if I stuck to my original plot, Derek Len (my favorite of my villains) would have never existed! 😀

                      Secondly, Refined started as a duology. It was supposed to be a retelling of the story of Esther, and then the next book would be similar to Acts. Now, I’ve decided that it’s going to be a stand-alone novel (with possibly a sequel or prequel in the very far future), that is just the retelling of the story of Queen Esther. That requires me to change a lot of things, but I’m excited for when i get to write it!! 🙂

                              @thearcaneaxiom

                              I feel like I should write up a super long reply, but to be honest, all I have to say is, wow. You (and your sister, shout out to her!) obviously have an amazing talent for world building and science fiction. I could probably spend a while dissecting what you just said XD

                              @loopylin

                              That’s a cute idea! I used to read Through the Looking Glass all. The. Time.

                              My Little Pony?!?!? Oooooohhhh the ToRtURe

                              Just kidding XD I’ve never actually watched that show before. But how did they turn into aliens??

                              @freedomwriter76

                              I can definitely see the appeal in making a villain into a slightly-ignorant boi who needs a redemption arc ?

                              Also, Riker is a great name! For some reason, Leon seems like a name for the German character (and Riker for the Jew), even though I’m sure those names don’t fit in the culture of the characters’ backstories. I think that’s because Leon seems like a name for someone stoic and tough-jawed, whereas Riker would be for a cast-out person. That’s how they sound to me. Isn’t that weird how another person will hear a name in a totally different way?

                              @esther-c

                              I love how lesser projects like NaNoWriMo projects and such can turn into much more ? It’s like “Woah… Why am I not writing this instead?”

                              Oooh and new villains are obviously cooooooooool (sorry sorry, I must stop the DrAmA)

                              By the way, how do you go about creating villains? I never manage to create any villain that actually catches my interest.
