Hey everyone,
Wow, it’s been ages since I’ve been on here. I guess life happened.
Like I said in the subject title, there’s a book series that I absolutely fell in love with. It’s also tremendously improved my writing skills in the first person.
It’s called the Ascendance Series and it has 5 books. It’s not a Christian series, and that’s noticeable by the books, but there’s nothing wrong in it that should keep people from reading it.
Disclaimer: This is my opinion (very biased for this series, like I said I’m in love) but I hope you enjoy it. I recommend checking the book out from a library before you spend your money on something you end up hating.

November 6, 2022 at 11:01 am #120896Ooh!! Looks like it’s time for me to go find it on Goodreads. Thanks for the recommendation! Clean book series are pretty hard to come by these days.
Anything in particular that made it so awesome?

November 6, 2022 at 1:59 pm #120901Nice! It was one of my favorite series growing up. But when I read them there were only three books in the series?
Huh, I guess the author decided to write a couple more because of their popularity. Are the last two books in the series worth reading?
Also, I’m quite curious, what would your ranking of the five books be?
November 6, 2022 at 5:22 pm #120921Yes, the last two books are definitely worth it. I especially love how she ends the last book. It makes all the trouble he goes through very very worth it. And in the last two books you can really see how his relationship with Imogen grows.
To rate the books, from favorite to least favorite, I think it would be Shattered Castle (book 5), Shadow Throne (book 3), Runaway King (book 2), Captive Kingdom (book 4), and False Prince (book 1)

November 6, 2022 at 5:31 pm #120926I really love these books because there’s action and risk (I love that kind of stuff) but not to a point where you get tired of it. Every time something happens, it’s unique in its own way. There’s no tension, just action, and not in a terrifying way that most action books put it.
I also love the characters. They are all so interesting and different and that makes the story really fun.
The author is also really good at portraying character relationships and how they grow over time. She’s probably the best I’ve read.
The main character (Sage a.k.a. Jaron) is a very exciting one worth following for the whole series. He’s not a wimp at all. At all.
The series is written in first person (honestly I didn’t even like first person POV until I read this series). She shares the character’s thoughts, but you don’t see him planning, because most of the time he doesn’t even know how he’s going to get out of “this one”. He offers no explanation why he’s doing a certain thing. It keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. These books have kept me awake until I finish them (so don’t start a book before bed unless you want to stay up all night).
They’re really great and I just love everything about them.

November 7, 2022 at 12:55 am #120942Ok, thanks so much! Seriously, I struggle to find stuff to read and really appreciate you making this topic.
Action without tension is great, to much tension and I have to stop reading because I get too invested (Wingfeather saga book three 😅 couldn’t get past the first third).
Sounds great!
EEEK just checked, they have the full series on my ebook app 😁 I’ll check out some reviews!!

November 7, 2022 at 12:59 am #120943Ok I’ve read the blurb. Can I make a wild guess at the major plot twist?
Sage perhaps… is the kings long lost son?
It felt predictable reading the blurb, like the usual thing to happen. But hey, maybe I’m way off and I could never guess what’s coming. 😂

November 7, 2022 at 1:01 pm #120960You’re right 🙂
But there are waaaaay more plot twists and a different one in each book (more like each chapter)
It’s definitely worth reading.
You’re good at guessing. Pays off to be a writer.

November 7, 2022 at 1:14 pm #120964Lol yes, pays to be a writer. I think I’m saving most of my fantasy tolerance for the wingfeather saga show (coming out this december yay) But when it has breaks in production I might read that.

Thanks!
Ooh, what is the Wingfeather Saga about?
Lol you sure you want to get me started on that?
So let me start of with… Book one isn’t good. But it’s necessary for the rest of the series. Super clique, let me briefly spoil the first book here
______SPOILER WARNING______
The Children are lost hiers to the throne in another country and are living in a oppressive government.

So yeah. But, book two is really good. The Mc’s are basically on the run for the entire time. I like book two because it removes the common protection that was in book one somewhat- and the character’s pay for their stupid choices. I can’t explain a lot without spioling it. I’ve only read the first two. I tried to read book three, but the tension was too much and I had to stop. I might go back and read it someday. The main theme is family and sacrifice. It’s aimed at middle grade, so expect the occasional fart joke. I could not have read it in middle school though lol. I’ll link the trailer if you want to see it, it’s going to be free and it’s completely crowd-funded. The show is canon because the author is a part of the making of it. The second book has an absolutely epic climax 🤣

Ooh, looks interesting. I’ll have to pick up a couple copies. And I thrive on action and tension in books, so I’m looking forward to that. 🙂
Thanks for the recommendation 🙂

November 9, 2022 at 3:34 pm #121165@pen_for_christ205 If you haven’t already, you might also like to check out Jennifer A. Nielsen’s (The author of the Ascendance Series) historical fiction books (Especially “Resistance”).
Also, possible readers of he Ascendance Series might want to know that for some reason “the devils” (whatever that means) tend to pop up quite a bit. Nothing supernatural happens, just the term keeps pops up (It’s annoying in my opinion). “I had to keep moving forward, and if the devils were willing I could go home again.”
You will love what you spend time with.
November 9, 2022 at 4:59 pm #121169Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check it out.
Yeah, how the devils are brought up gets annoying, but other than that I really like the series.

Check!
Added to my reading list.
This series looks interesting I might have to suggest it to my newly formed book group. We will have to finish the Poppy War first. (Also the Poppy War is amazing (its based on a fantasy version the second sino-japanese war) I would recommend it to you all but It has a reading level of a high-school Junior ( our group is all Sophmores but I knew we could handle it))
