@gracie-j. @keilah-h. @joy-caroline. @lrose5. @ava-blue. @eaw24. Okay y’all, I have a Short Story Marvel fanfic. đ Just for background info, this is supposed to take place in the 5 years between Infinity War and Endgame, the time that The Blip lasted. I’m pretty proud of this, lol. XD Any thoughts? đ
Heeled boots clicked against the concrete floor. Silverware was placed on napkins.
âShouldnât Cap have been back from his session already?â
Natasha turned to face Rhodey, who was carefully setting silverware down.
She rubbed one of her boots against her calf. âI think he is. He has to be in here somewhere. Iâll find him. Hey, Rocket, help Rhodey, will you?â
âFine. Fine.â Rocket muttered, jumping off the counter and onto the table, taking the knives from Rhodey.
âI donât think I should trust you with knives.â
âDo you have any idea how many dangerous things Iâve done? This is nothing, Iron Boy.â
Natasha rolled her eyes as she walked away. Those two were nuts. But they could make her laugh and smile.
Just like Clint.
Natasha shook her head. She didnât need to think about that. She didnât know where her best friend was.
Only that he was going around getting revenge on villains, who took his entire family away from him.
Natasha only hoped, wherever he was, that he was safe.
She hoped the same for Yelena.
Bruce and Thor were missing, Tony had a family now and moved away, and that left her and Steve to live in the Avengers compound along with Rhodey, and Rocket, who decided to move in.
Without permission, of course.
A loud thud and break of metal stopped her in her tracks. She knew it.
Natasha quietly stepped into the gym, using her learned skills to remain silent.
And there he was.
Replacing the punching bag, as the other was broken and sitting against the wall, the metal chain that had kept it up laying on the floor beside it.
The moment he had the new bag up, Steve was going at it, with even more aggression and helplessness than Natasha had ever seen.
She heard his grunts, groans, sighs, and curses.
âAre you going to break all of the bags we have?â
Steve turned, quick, his eyes wide.
âEasy Steve. Itâs just me.â Natasha whispered, stepping forward.
Steveâs eyes went back to normal, but his body still looked tense. He ran a hand through his blonde hair. âIâŠI didnât realize you were there.â
âWhat else would you expect?â Natasha asked playfully.
Steve didnât even smile.
âHow did another session go?â
âFine. Still the same. Everyone is trying to figure out how to live. You know, get back to some kind of normal,â Steve punched the bag again, hard, âbut no one seems to be doing much better. If at all.â
âIâm sure thatâs hard.â
Steve punched the bag again, even harder. âNothing I canât handle.â
Natasha knew to not respond to that. Instead, she stood still and silently watched as he went after the punching bag again.
And again.
And again.
Steve hit it one more time, even harder than all the times before it, and pulled his hand away with a hiss.
Natasha went to his side.
The cloths, wrapped around his fists, were ripped. âSteve, your hands are bleeding.â
âI know. But Iâm fine.â He tried to pull away.
Natasha held his wrists tighter.
She didnât care if she made imprints on his wrists. âStop it with the punching bag. Your wounds need to be taken care of. You can go after the punching bag in a little while after you give your hands a break. Alright?â
Slowly, Steve nodded.
Natasha smiled and nodded. âGood. Now, Iâm going to go get bandages and medicine out of that closet right there, so you can go over there,â Natasha pointed at the couch that had been placed in the gym right nearby, âand sit down.â
She let go of Steveâs wrists and began heading towards the closet. Then she turned around. âSteve, sit down.â
Steve merely looked at her, biting his lip. âI really donât need you to take care of them. This happens all the time, Nat. Itâs not a big deal. I can handle it.â
âSit down, please, Steve. I just want to help you out a little this time.â She opened the closet and quickly found the medical supplies Tony had put in there, âjust in caseâ. For once, she was thankful for how careful he was.
She turned back around. âSteveâŠI said, sit down.â
âNatasha, I can handle this myself. You donât-â
âSteven. Grant. Rogers. Sit down. Right now.â
Steve obeyed, fast. âYes Maâam.â
Natasha grinned and walked over to him, sitting down beside him on the couch, sitting sideways so she could face him.
She carefully began unraveling the cloths wrapped around his hands. âSteve, how often does this happen?â
Steve shrugged. âI donât know. A lot more recently, I guess.â
âYouâve been in the gym a lot lately.â Natasha replied softly.
Steve shrugged. âIt helps me think.â
âBeating the crap out of yourself helps you think?â
Steveâs cheeks flushed slightly. âNo. Beating the crap out of the bag helps me think.â
Natasha nodded. Began wiping blood away before applying the medicine to Steveâs open cuts.
âCounseling all those peopleâŠdo any of them ever ask about you?â
Steve shrugged again. âNot really. But Iâm a man from another time. Iâve already adapted once before. I can do it again.â
âThat doesnât mean itâs easier for you than everyone else, Steve.â
âI can handle this, Nat. I can take care of myself. I can do anything.â
âSure you can. But you shouldnât be doing it alone.â Natasha whispered, wrapping his hands up with bandages and pressing, hard, to stop the blood flow. âAnd that doesnât mean you need to keep coming into the gym to hide and pent out all your anger and pain and not address it with anyone.â
âEveryone needs me.â
âYeah, Steve, you know what? We do. But if youâre going to be throwing yourself away like this, then I donât want nor need you.â
âIâm not throwing myself away, Nat, I justâŠâ Steveâs gaze fell, âI just donât know what to do anymore. Punching a punching bag has always helped toâŠtoâŠâ
âMake the memories go away.â Natasha finished, knowing.
Steve slowly nodded. âYeah. Back then, it was the war. Sometimes they still areâŠbut nowâŠthereâs other thingsâŠâ
Natasha nodded.
And again, she saw Steve sitting on the ground where Bucky had disappeared into dust, back all those years ago, dust clutched in his hands, saying; âOh GodâŠoh GodâŠâ over and over again.
â…other things that keep coming back.â
âItâs about Sam and BuckyâŠisnât it?â
âEveryone. ButâŠyeah, those two specifically. Sam was just trying to help us out. And BuckyâŠBucky was finallyâŠBucky again. In Wakanda, he finallyâŠfinally fully remembered who he was. And now, Nat, nowâŠheâs gone.â
Natasha rested her arm around his shoulder. âI knowâŠso many areâŠâ
âAnd I couldnâtâŠI couldnât get to him in time. He said the same thing he did when I came for himâŠback at Zolaâs lab in the 40s. But this timeâŠthis time I didnât get to save him. I saw him. I saw the look on his face. But he stillâŠhe still trusted me. In his eyes, I still saw trust. Nat, I didnât get to him in time.â Steve breathed, his breaths beginning to become heavier.
A sign that Steve was fighting back tears.
â…What did he say?â she asked, soft, quiet.
Steve glanced at her. âSteve.â
Natasha didnât reply to that.
âNat, he shouldnât have. He shouldnât have trusted me. I failed him. Again. I messed up. Just like every time. He shouldnât have trusted me, Nat. No one should have.â
Natasha squeezed his shoulder. âWhy? Youâre Captain America. Youâve done so much. Youâve helped so many. Youâve succeeded, time and time again. Steve, youâre a hero.â
âNo. Iâve failed, time and time again.â
âSure, youâve messed up. But Steve, you did your best. Youâre still Captain America. Youâre still a-â
âAnd a hero canât still be a man?â Steve pulled away from her grip, âCaptain America canât be Steve Rogers?â
Ah. That made sense.
âSteveâŠthen stop. Stop forcing yourself to be Captain America. Be Steve, for all I care. Be Steve when you canât be Captain America. You donât have to be strong for everyone else.â
Steve closed his eyes.
Clenched his fists.
âBut I do, NatâŠI do have to be strong for everyone. I have to remain optimistic. I have to remain hopeful. I have to take care of everyone else. I have to carry the burden so they donât have to. I have to be good. Or at leastâŠI have to be okay. For everyone else.â
âSteve, you donât have to be the hero all the time. Let someone else be the hero for once.â
âIâm a leader. Iâm Americaâs hero, Nat, the worldâs hero. I have to be strong. I have to be okay. Even with everything thatâs going on, I have to be okay.â
Natasha had once thought the same thing, having been told that emotions, scars, needed to be pushed down. Hidden from the world.
But Clint had shown her something very different.
âMaybe we donât have to be okay.â
Steve opened his eyes.
Looked over at her.
Natasha gripped his shoulder. Shook it. âMaybe itâs okay if weâre broken. Maybe itâs okay if weâre not okay. Maybe itâs okay if weâre weak. After all, if we were all strong, what would friends and family be for?â
Steve bit his lip.
Shrugged.
âExactly. Theyâre there to help us. To strengthen us. To make us laugh and smile and sometimes cry. Theyâre the shoulders we can lean on when everyone else walks away. Theyâre the people who know that when weâre out there, telling the world that weâre okay, weâre actually breaking inside. Theyâre the people who inspire us to reach higher, dream bigger, to smile brighter, and laugh louder. AndâŠtheyâre the kind of people who would come inside your gym, help take care of your wounds, and give you a listening ear. Thatâs what family and friends are for, Steve. To be with us so we donât have to be strong alone.â
Steve nodded, a few stray tears coursing down his cheeks.
âNow come on, Steve.â
Natasha leaned in close, wrapped her arms around Steve, and hugged him tight.
Steveâs arms wrapped around her as well.
They hugged for a few moments, before Natasha softly pulled away. âNow, I think thereâs some dinner ready.â
âMmmâŠfast food again?â
Natasha shook her head. âNo. I actually found something to cook this timeâŠweâll bring them back, Steve. I know we will.â
Steve nodded and smiled. âI know we will.â
They both stood.
âEspecially if you get it into your head to do so. Youâre pretty stubborn, Nat.â
She scoffed. âLook whoâs talking. Mr. Didnât want to sit down and tell me about how he was really feeling.â she winked.
Steve grinned. They began to walk, side by side. âThen youâre Ms. Needed Steve to listen to her and called him by all three of his names.â
Natasha playfully slapped his arm. âYeah, yeah. But disagree with my advice again, and youâll get it, Steve.â
Steve stopped, stood at attention, and gave her a salute. âAye aye, Captain, Romanoff, Natasha, Maâam.â
Natasha couldnât help but laugh. She nudged Steveâs shoulder. âAlright. Thatâs dish washing duty for you, Captain.â
Steve laughed. âYes Maâam.â
They walked towards the kitchen, side by side.
It was okay to not be okay.
Natasha glanced at Steve.
Because that was where family came in.

@keilah-h. Aww, thank you so much!!!! đ
Steve is my absolute favorite, so writing him comes easy. XD And Natasha is another favorite of mine. This idea came to mind and wouldn’t go away, so I was like: “Okay then. I guess this needs to be written then.” And this was born. XD
Again, thank you so much! đ

@gracie-j. Aww, thank you so much! đ I know, right!? I agree with Steve & Peggy being a couple, (they are SOOO cute!) but Steve and Natasha are like, so precious together when they’re friends. đ
I KNOW, RIGHT!? đđ« That would have been so interesting to see! đ I want to see what Clint, Natasha, Steve, Tony, etc, went through while that was happening. And like, WHERE DID BRUCE GO!? He got to where he was able to control Hulk, but HOW…WHERE!? đ Also, like, am I the only one that wants to see Tony’s wedding and Morgan as a baby and toddler? Oh, my goodness, girl, Morgan stole my heart in Endgame. đ„°đ„°đ„° I guess I’ll just have to write it. đ And totally, it’d be fun (as a writer, lol) to see what Thor, Clint, Natasha, Steve, Tony, etc, are all going through as they all grieve the loss of someone (or someone’s) they loved. Now that would be interesting to write and see. đ Sad, too, but a great way to learn how to write characters that struggle with that. đ„ș

@gracie-j. Ah, yes, it’s fun to ship characters, isn’t it? XD XD XD I can see why you would do that in Winter Soldier. They were cute. đ So, who did YOU think made the best woman for Steve? (We’ve all got different opinions. *wink*) And which Marvel ships are your favs? I personally love Steve & Peggy and Tony & Pepper the most, oh, and Clint & Laura, because they make a cute married couple. đ And did you know that in the comics Bucky & Nat were a couple? XD
Haha. Yes, we won’t go there. XD YES, MORE OF THE STARK FAMILY!!! Yeah…*cries*

@freedomwriter76 Absolutely!!! AUGH IDK. Like…I liked him and Peggy…but I think Nat really was perfect for him during that time of his life, you know? Honestly, I just don’t like him and Sharon. *shudders* XD
Ooooh. My fav ships? Shoot. I don’t know!!! WAIT. Maybe Nat and Bruce. As much as I like her with Steve, the very moment Nat and Bruce met in the first Avengers, sparks flew!!!
Ahh, I think I remembered seeing that! So were Nat and Clint…and Clint and Wanda!
YES YES YES!

@gracie-j. YEP! đ Haha, I don’t like him and Sharon either. đŹ And Sharon in FATWS!? She was annoying, just being honest. đ I can agree with Steve & Peggy or Steve & Nat though. I’m actually starting to really like Steve & Nat as a couple, lol. đ
And YES! NAT AND BRUCE were SOOO CUTE! đ
I know! đ I like Clint and Nat as friends better though, and Wanda & Vision all the way. Even though it doesn’t really make sense…lol. đ
YEP!!!! đ
