One of the things I love most about writing is that while a good author has a multitude of words available to him, he has the ability to condense what he wants to say into a few words or sentences–but just those few can really pack a punch! Flash fiction is to me one of the most intriguing genres; and I love to geek out over even more condensed forms such as six-word stories!! (Ernest Hemingway’s story about the baby shoes… 😭😭😭)
So I’m curious to see, what one-liners, six word stories, or short series of sentences that tell a tale all in the space of a paragraph, can y’all come up with? Here are a few that I’ve thought up to start us off 🙂
~~~
“Tell me where it hurts.”
“What for? You can’t fix it. Nobody can.”
“What do you mean? It doesn’t look–”
“Broken hearts can’t be mended, love.”
~~~
I long to show you my heart, but I fear for what you would do with it.

Dear Diary,
Even the fireflies have left me.

June 30, 2022 at 1:01 pm #112008@starshiness Those are awesome tidbits of story! Sadly, I don’t have anything which could fit in a single paragraph. I sorta think in long stories…….
Where'd I get ya this time? The liver? The kidney? I'm runnin' outta places to put holes in ya.
June 30, 2022 at 2:32 pm #112022Ty! Haha I can relate; I tend to be a veryyyy wordy person. It’s only with extreme effort that I can force myself to condense my thoughts.

July 2, 2022 at 9:12 pm #112075Oh yes! I do love seeing how much can be related in just a few words. It’s one thing that make poetry such a fun challenge.
(The baby shoes story is heartbreaking.)
I think some of my favorites are from the Bible (Like “God shall provide himself a sacrifice”. Can I get an amen?), but of course I didn’t write them.
I’ll have to get back on here later for/with some more, but for now here is one from an expiramental short story I was writing to get a feel for one of my books. It’s not the most condensed, but I tried to use every word.
I am a water runner, and water drawn from the well is in my jug. It’s for the other Serfs, but maybe for the stones too. You see, whenever they hit me, I can’t help but spill some.
I wish they wouldn’t waste the water.
You have listened to fears, child. Come, let me breathe on you... Are you brave again? -Aslan
July 2, 2022 at 9:14 pm #112076Oh, and yours are very good. You did so well making just a few words tell so much.

July 5, 2022 at 7:59 pm #112118@elishavet-pidyon AHHH yes, I definitely agree with you there! I love the artistic tidbits found in the Bible, and how it has some of the best imagery and patterns for writing. I mean take the book of Psalms, how much more BEAUTIFUL poetry can you get than that?!
Sweet!
Oh I love that! The paragraph is very short and concise so the use of the word ‘water’ three distinct times seems (to me) to show how preciously it’s valued.
Thanks!
