Evil cannot kill the children of God.

By Emily Cozzens

Ash clings to my skin

Smoke stings my eyes

The trees are just skeletons

Blackened and dry

The chimney still stands

Amidst the white ash

And the small plume of smoke

Is no longer black

As we wade through

The towering black timber

Our footsteps leave

Small puffs of powder

Sunlight beats through

The deadened black trees

With no canopy

Left to relieve

The heat, the pain

The story of horror

Spelled out before me

In each and every corner

But the sun illuminates

The story of hope

In a small blade of grass

So people can know

It takes more than flames

To snuff out our life

Out of these ashes

You’ll watch us rise

Watch us rise high

High and tall

Bring back the life

That you thought would fall

We’ll stand like these trees

Tall and proud

Even though our ashes

Are scattered on the ground

It takes more than flames

To snuff out our life

Out of these ashes

You’ll watch us rise
