                @daeus I haven’t written prose in so long it hurts. I’m here, even if I am just characterizing. *sigh*

                  @dragon-snapper Great.

                  Now, I’m curious. I can’t really chat until I’m done writing, but I’m wondering what you’re doing for characterization. Are you writing up backstories or filling out character question charts?

                    @daeus Well, I found that character charts didn’t really work for me…so I’m just trying to figure these guys out by interviews…which is getting old fast…I think I’ll try backstories.
                    You see….I can’t stand doing the characterization. *bows head* It is my weakness.

                      @daeus I’m signing out now. I didn’t get much done, except now I feel like I can’t write….*ugh* 😛
                      Good luck!

                        @dragon-snapper I edited 922 words. Glad you feel ready to write now.

                        I asked about how you were doing characterization because it seemed that maybe you weren’t getting to writing because the characterization was taking too long. If you don’t mind, I thought I’d share my characterization process, not because it’s the right way to do things, but it’s a different approach and it’s just possible some of it might be helpful.

                        I actually don’t start with any of the normal stuff like developing character backstory or interviewing them. I would probably get some degree of value doing these and maybe I should, but I’ve found I’ve never actually needed them.

                        What I do start with are snapshots of scenes like paintings in my mind. They’re these strong impressions filled with mood and character. For instance, maybe the only scene I have plotted out for my story is my climax, but I can learn almost everything I need to know about my character right there. I can feel what my character is feeling in that climax scene. When I dream it, its a very intimate thing. I may not know the exact words passing through his mind or even what he looks like, but I know what it’s like to be him. Do you know how every person has this “feel” to them? If you’re away from them and you call them to memory, that feeling tingles your senses. That feeling you get is based directly off who they are as a person.

                        I use this in a reverse way. I base their character off what they “feel” like. If I do something that is out of character for them, I’ll generally know because it breaks the feel. So, taking my MC in my WIP, I’ve actually never even thought about who his parents were. Not even once. But I’ve never needed to know. Someday I might find out by how he acts what his parents were like or if he had any, but until then I’m clueless. But, hey, it works.

                        I will say that I think I might use this slightly too exclusively, but overall it’s been a very good system for me.
