Hey, guys! The other day I came up with the weirdest idea for a novel.
What if the book was told from a tree’s POV?

Very weird, I know. It’s unique though. I always think about what the trees are seeing (or what they WOULD see). I just don’t know how to make it work. Would the tree be watching a single person? If so, how could I make it interesting? A tree stays in one place, so the person would have to also.
Or maybe I could switch between different trees to follow the person…?
I honestly can’t figure it out.

@epicaddie2 that could be very cool, though I’m not nearly clever enough to figure out how one would pull that off powerfully. 😛

It did remind me of this though— I, Sherwood. Perhaps you can get some inspiration from that. 😉

I don’t think this idea would work for a full length book, however, if you wanted to make it into a short story or a poem, that would be cool. @epicaddie2

Maybe if I switched between the tree’s POV and the main character’s?

I was also thinking that if I switched between several different trees of different kinds, that each different tree would have a different personality that kind of matched with its (man, how do I explain this?) tree species. So maybe like a maple would be really nice, while a spruce is kind of like… I dunno. Like it has a pointy personality..?

I honestly don’t know how do explain it. I have it in my head, but I just can’t put it into words.

@that_writer_girl_99 A poem would be really cool, but I’m not very good at poetry.
I guess you’re right that it wouldn’t work as a novel, but a short story could work. I just need to figure out HOW to get it to work.

Well, here’s a thought. Some trees are more than 100 years old. That means they’ve “seen” a lot of stuff–a lot of historical events, a lot of people, a lot of change. Anyone (or anything) who’s seen stuff like that deserves to have their story told.

@that_writer_girl_99 Exactly! I just feel like trees could tell so many stories! Their stories need to be told by someone, and I want that someone to be me. I just need to figure out how to tell the story.
What if a tree tells the story of some historical event, like maybe a war or something?

I could see a vengeance plot being really cool with a tree, but that’s kinda morbid.

@epicaddie2, I agree that it probably wouldn’t work for a novel, but a short story told from the pov of a tree would be fascinating. Like Elizabeth said, there are some really awesome and old trees in the world. Maybe a historical short story about a famous tree that lived through a historical event? You could Google the Hiroshima Bonsai tree, because it’s really cool and I’d love to hear its story through its own pov (if you don’t write that, I might have to!). Good luck with it anyway!

@seekjustice There could be a lot of cool stories told by old trees. I just googled the Hiroshima Bonsai tree, and it looks like it could make a great story! Maybe that’s what I’ll do.

@epicaddie2, yeah I once read a children’s picture book about the bonsai but never a story narrated by the tree itself. I think it would be pretty cool.
