What do you guys think about revenge storylines?
Like, do you think itβs wrong for someone to kill a terrible person because of what theyβve done to them in the past? I know a lot of storylines like that end with forgiveness and giving up the revenge, while many (lots of westerns) end with the person exacting their revenge, then moving on with their lives. Do you guys think thatβs wrong? And then, as it applies to stories, do you think itβs a bad move to put a successful revenge in your book?
Just some random thoughtsβ¦

Short answer: Revenge is bad. Vengeance is Mine, saith the Lord. I will repay.
Long answer: that doesnβt mean you canβt have revenge in your story. Even a successful revenge. But for the sake of truth, it should never be without consequences. There are always consequences when man takes God into his own hands. Whether heβs acting against Him or in His place; itβs all the same. That authority does not belong to man, unless he is a judge, and then itβs not vengeance, but justice. When an ordinary man takes that authority, however just it may seem, there are always consequences.
They donβt have to be as drastic as the rest of his life being ruined, but they need to be there to show that vengeance, even when successful, is not satisfying and should not be glorified as an acceptable life goal. And I personally really enjoy the vengeance storyline, provided itβs done well. π
Ah man, Kate already said everything. π

April 4, 2017 at 9:20 am #29351@Daeus can we just address the fact that every single remotely sensible person whoβs joined KP seems to have developed the trademark split personality after about a year on the forum? XD

Timing. Is. Amazing.
Funnily enough, not only am I reading (in my opinion) the best revenge plot ever write, a la Hamlet, but am also writing a paper on Hamlet/Revenge vs Justice. But I donβt really have anything to say beyond what @kate-flournoy said sooooβ¦ darn it, Kate, youβre always so thorough. *sadly trudges out*
April 4, 2017 at 12:54 pm #29366@Adry_Grace nooooo! Discussions are supposed to be nice and long with lots of opinionsβ¦ *sniff* Next time Iβm going to stay off until other people have said things. XD
Mm, good topic. I can appreciate everything being said here, because inevitably, I will have to consider if I want to include this in my WIPβ¦
But, split personalities? Gollum impressions? Iβm starting to wonder what I got myself into by joining KPβ¦
